Haiti’s electoral governing body announced it is preparing a revised electoral calendar, indicating a further delay in the country’s democratic process. The announcement follows a previous schedule established in July, which aimed to hold the nation’s first presidential elections in a decade on December 13. However, escalating gang violence and low voter registration numbers have raised doubts regarding the feasibility of that date.
Greg Yoder, a representative from Christian World Outreach, highlighted security as a major concern, particularly for residents in Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas. “Security and safety are the biggest issue,” Yoder stated, reflecting the serious implications of gang activities on the electoral process.
An October report from experts appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General noted that some gang alliances in Haiti have fractured, exposing civilians to increased violence. Yoder expressed concern that another delay in elections might undermine hopes for positive change in the country’s political landscape.
Despite these challenges, Yoder emphasized a broader mission through their outreach programs. “Every CWO project serves this purpose,” he remarked, pointing to spiritual encouragement as a foundation for their work. CWO operates vocational training centers for women and feeding programs for children, aiming to build community and promote faith alongside practical aid.
In their programs, children waiting for meals learn Bible verses and hear gospel stories, engaging their families as well. “I’ve seen kids that have been in a feeding program grow up and start participating in church and being leaders in the churches,” Yoder noted.
As CWO continues its efforts, Yoder urged the public to pray for the situation in Haiti, covering political, physical, and spiritual dimensions. He asked for prayers for staff working locally and for wise decision-making in their outreach initiatives.
For those interested in supporting CWO’s work in Haiti, Yoder shared that a contribution of $30 a month can provide food for a child for an entire year. He also mentioned plans for a special Christmas meal and small gifts for children, encouraging donations to assist with these efforts.
As Haiti grapples with ongoing challenges, the call for prayer and support emphasizes a commitment to providing hope in a difficult landscape.
