Everytown for Gun Safety has committed $3 million to support the election of former volunteers from Moms Demand Action, an advocacy group focused on reducing gun violence, in state legislatures. The initiative aims to influence battleground districts in several key states, including Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
The organization detailed its plans in a news release shared with NBC News. In Arizona, Everytown intends to cast Republican state legislators Lisa Fink and Tony Rivero as “MAGA extremists” associated with the gun lobby through targeted advertising.
In Michigan, an advertisement for Democrat Alex Hawkins’ campaign highlights concerns that “MAGA extremists” aim to reverse sensible gun laws. Hawkins advocates for increasing police presence and resources as part of his platform.
This advertising push coincides with Democratic efforts to secure and expand control over significant legislative chambers in major battleground states. Everytown President John Feinblatt emphasized the importance of progress on gun safety, stating that much of this progress begins in state legislatures, particularly as federal gun laws face challenges under the Trump administration.
Everytown has been active in training volunteers and gun violence survivors for political campaigns since launching a program in 2021. This initiative has successfully aided in the election of more than 600 volunteers, the organization reported.
