NEW YORK – Elon Musk has emerged as the largest known donor in this year’s midterm elections, contributing over $276 million since July to bolster Republican candidates in Congress.
Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for Musk’s super PAC, confirmed these figures, which were reported prior to a federal filing deadline. Notably, Musk’s donations include $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which supports Republican Senate candidates, marking one of the largest political contributions in U.S. history.
Additionally, Musk has donated $76 million to America PAC, a super PAC that has organized a significant turnout operation similar to the one used during the 2024 election of Donald Trump. He also provided $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, which backs Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
This represents a sharp change from Musk’s stance last May, when he indicated an intention to reduce political spending, stating, “I think I’ve done enough.” Despite his recent financial commitment to Republican efforts, Musk has maintained a lower public profile compared to his more involved role in 2024, where he participated in Trump rallies and held a position in the Department of Government Efficiency.
Musk has since reconciled with Trump following a split during his time in government, with the former president recently awarding him the National Medal of Science.
His net worth has recently hovered around the $1 trillion mark due to fluctuations in stock prices, with Forbes reporting he topped that figure again last week. The Republican Party currently enjoys a significant financial advantage over Democrats, a situation that may benefit them as they prepare for challenges amidst increasing voter dissatisfaction with the current administration, rising inflation, and ongoing issues related to the war with Iran.
The midterm elections are shaping up to be critical, with Musk’s financial contributions potentially influencing key races as candidates gear up for the upcoming votes.
