The African Bird Club (ABC) has announced it has surpassed the £750,000 milestone in funding for bird conservation initiatives across Africa. This significant financial achievement has been instrumental in supporting a range of conservation projects aimed at protecting critical habitats and promoting biodiversity.
Notable achievements include the safeguarding of 323 hectares of Dakatcha Woodland in coastal Kenya. This area is vital for several threatened species, such as Clarke’s Weaver, Sokoke Scops-owl, and Sokoke Pipit, all of which benefit from the protection efforts funded by ABC.
Additionally, an ABC-supported aerial survey in Zambia’s Barotse Floodplain uncovered three significant waterbird breeding colonies. One colony was found to have approximately 68,000 African Openbill nests, while another is home to Africa’s largest known concentration of African Spoonbills. The survey’s findings have since led to ongoing monitoring efforts to assess the health of these populations.
In Ghana, ABC has initiated a project employing camera traps to study predation patterns affecting nests of the White-necked Picathartes. This project aims to enhance understanding of the species’ breeding success and informs conservation strategies.
The funding from ABC has also played a critical role in fostering future conservationists. In Sierra Leone, ABC grants established bird clubs for young people and supported the creation of a local language bird guide. In Uganda, Village Bird Clubs near Kibale National Park have successfully engaged over 200 children, promoting tree planting and raising awareness about threatened species.
Many individuals and organizations that received ABC grants have gone on to pursue careers in research, conservation, and environmental education. Additionally, these supported entities have successfully attracted further funding and established collaborations with local communities and government bodies.
ABC expressed gratitude to its donors, partners, volunteers, and project leaders for their contributions, which have made this financial milestone achievable.
