Boston Red Sox prospect Justin Gonzales, ranked second in the team’s farm system, is set to join Toros del Este for the Dominican Winter League. This move comes after the Red Sox’s farm system experienced a decline, falling from the top 10 to the bottom 10 in baseball following a trade deal with the Baltimore Orioles that included All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman.
Gonzales, a 19-year-old outfielder, originally signed with the Red Sox organization for $250,000 as part of the 2024 international free agent class. He made his debut in the Dominican Summer League that same year and transitioned to the United States in 2025. During his 2025 season, he played 93 games across the Florida Complex League and High-A, posting a batting line of .281/.363/.390 with four home runs.
After facing challenges in High-A, Gonzales was reassigned to the same level at the start of the 2026 season. He improved significantly, playing 89 games with the Greenville Drive, where he recorded a batting average of .271 and smashed 17 home runs, leading to a promotion to Double-A Portland on August 17.
In Portland, despite being one of the youngest players at that level, Gonzales managed a batting line of .239/.353/.380 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 210 pounds, Gonzales has considerable power potential. He faced a challenge with a high ground-ball rate of 57.4 percent in 2025, which hindered his ability to showcase that power. However, he made adjustments in 2026, decreasing his ground-ball rate to 46.6 percent, allowing him to tap into more of his offensive capabilities.
The Dominican Winter League season commenced on October 16, featuring six teams competing in a 50-game regular season, followed by an 18-game round-robin tournament among the top four teams. Gonzales’ team, Toros del Este, opened the season with an 11-0 defeat, although Gonzales did not participate in the game.
The regular season of the LIDOM runs until December 22, providing Gonzales with an opportunity to further develop his skills and gain experience in a competitive environment.
