The Dominican Republic has been highlighted as a premier golf destination in the Caribbean, particularly known for its stunning courses and picturesque landscapes. A recent exploration revisited the author’s first experience golfing in the country, which took place over thirty years ago at Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata. The course, designed by Robert Trent Jones and opened in 1976, fostered a deep enthusiasm for Caribbean golf.
Fast forward to a more recent visit for the Latin America Amateur Championship, held at the renowned Teeth of the Dog course, part of the Casa de Campo resort. This exceptional course features seven breathtaking seaside holes and has cemented its reputation as one of the most sought-after golfing experiences since its construction in 1971. The course name references the jagged coral along its shore, which posed significant challenges during its development.
The Teeth of the Dog course is characterized by its mix of inland and oceanfront holes. After navigating the initial four holes, players encounter the fifth, a short par 3 with significant hazards. Subsequent holes provide more challenges, including a driving hole that skirts the shoreline and another photogenic par 3 set against the ocean. Each hole is designed to provide both visual appeal and difficulty, particularly the demanding 8th hole with its concealed bunker.
The clubhouse experience further enhances the visit, with amenities and services that complement a day on the course. The back nine, which runs clockwise, features a series of holes that evoke awe, and improvements to the course have enhanced its status among the world’s most beautiful golf venues.
Other noteworthy courses include the To Dye Fore course, which offers three distinct nine-hole loops, each with unique scenic views, and Corales, located near the eastern tip of the island. Corales is the site of the annual Puntacana Championship on the PGA Tour and is known for its dramatic coastal holes crafted by Tom Fazio.
Punta Espada, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is another standout, featuring 18 unforgettable holes with breathtaking ocean vistas. Each hole at Punta Espada delivers not only excitement but also stunning natural beauty, making it a sought-after destination for golfers seeking an unforgettable experience.
Additional top courses in the Dominican Republic include La Cana and PGA Ocean’s 4, both of which are recommended for their unique offerings. With an array of world-class golfing options, the Dominican Republic stands out as one of the top golf destinations globally, attracting players from around the world.
