The Africa Raw Materials Summit 2026 is focused on promoting industrialization and economic growth across the continent by leveraging its abundant natural resources. Rich in crude oil, natural gas, solid minerals, agricultural products, and critical minerals like lithium and cobalt, many African nations currently face challenges related to exporting these resources in their raw form, which limits the potential for local economic benefits.
Themed “From African Feedstock to African Factory,” the summit brings together policymakers, investors, industry leaders, and various stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at enhancing value addition, facilitating investment, and encouraging technology transfer. The primary goal is to boost local production, create jobs, strengthen African industries, and diminish reliance on imported finished goods, ensuring that a larger portion of the economic value generated from the continent’s resources remains within Africa.
Oluwemimo Joseph, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), emphasized the need for African countries to transition from merely processing raw materials to commercializing and manufacturing finished products locally. During his address at the summit, he highlighted the wealth of essential resources available in Nigeria and throughout Africa, particularly materials required for electricity generation, battery manufacturing, and energy storage systems.
Joseph noted that developing these resources locally could significantly reduce production costs, create job opportunities, and bolster Africa’s industrial capacity. He also proposed the implementation of policies mandating that at least 30 percent of value addition occurs before raw materials are exported. Joseph stressed that achieving industrialization would require effective legislation and collaboration among governments, academic institutions, researchers, and industry leaders.
He raised concerns regarding the underutilization of research conducted in academic settings, urging that findings be transformed into marketable products. Joseph asserted that combining Africa’s natural resources with its scientific expertise is crucial for driving economic growth and establishing a robust manufacturing sector.
The summit is a pivotal platform for discussing the advancements needed to reshape the future of Africa’s industrial landscape and improve the economic leverage of its natural resources.
