The Placer County Board of Supervisors approved a Memorandum of Agreement this week with the Regents of the University of California to evaluate the expansion of educational and research initiatives into Tahoe City through UC Davis and its Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).
The partnership aims to establish a regional hub for science, education, and community engagement on county-owned land in Tahoe City. Currently, TERC operates facilities in Incline Village, Nevada.
Under the agreement, the county and UC Davis will explore plans to utilize underused properties, including the former Tahoe City Fire Station 51, the community center, and the Bechdolt building, which spans over 10,000 square feet. The fire station, built in 1961, was previously home to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District before it relocated in 2012.
The board has allocated $500,000 from the Tahoe Economic and Community Enhancement Fund to assess various project options. Future decisions will involve agreements regarding leasing, construction, and funding.
District 5 Supervisor Cindy Gustafson emphasized the extensive community feedback gathered over the past decade to identify a sustainable future for the fire station property. “This partnership allows us to explore a concept that brings together environmental research, education and community activities while supporting Tahoe City’s year-round vitality,” Gustafson said.
Efforts to engage the community regarding potential uses for these properties have included multiple planning initiatives, such as the 2011 West Commons Beach Alternatives Analysis and a Request for Information process from 2017 to 2020. Ongoing discussions with the Climate and Wildfire Institute Inc. have also been part of these explorations.
Community priorities identified during consultations focus on three key areas: advancing environmental science and protection, enhancing public awareness and stewardship of natural resources, and creating spaces for community and arts engagement.
The planned collaboration with UC Davis and TERC seeks to incorporate these priorities into a comprehensive vision for the proposed Tahoe City site, with any future developments pending further evaluations and planning processes from the county.
