Caleb Williams led the Chicago Bears to a 30-24 victory over the New England Patriots on Thursday night at Soldier Field, throwing for 308 yards and two touchdowns. This win marks the Bears’ fifth consecutive victory, moving them to a record of 5-2 and keeping them in contention for the NFC North title.
In a matchup featuring two of the top quarterbacks from the 2024 NFL draft, Williams, the first overall pick, faced off against third overall pick Drake Maye. In their first encounter as rookies, Maye had led the Patriots to a 19-3 win over the Bears. However, Williams bounced back in this rematch, completing 22 of 33 passes after missing time with a hamstring injury.
Wide receiver Luther Burden played a pivotal role in the Bears’ offense, finishing with four receptions for 130 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown catch just before halftime. Colston Loveland contributed with a 12-yard touchdown reception. Kicker Cairo Santos capped off the scoring with a franchise-record-tying 58-yard field goal in the closing moments of the game.
Maye had an impressive performance as well, completing 24 of 31 passes for 321 yards, including two touchdown passes. He also scored on a seven-yard rush to put the Patriots on the board during the first half. However, Maye’s night took a turn when he was intercepted in the end zone by Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson late in the second quarter.
Despite the loss, the Patriots managed to keep the game close, reducing the Bears’ lead with a 48-yard touchdown pass from Maye to Rhamondre Stevenson in the third quarter. Stevenson finished the game with five receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.
Chicago’s victory came during a special atmosphere at Soldier Field as the team honored former coach and tight end Mike Ditka, who passed away earlier this month. A pregame moment of silence was held, and fans were given fake mustaches to commemorate Ditka’s legacy.
Looking ahead, the Bears will aim to capitalize on their momentum as they continue the season. The next game is crucial for them to maintain their standing in the NFC North as they chase a playoff spot.
