Thousands of people are marching in Madrid to advocate for improved public pensions, as protests erupt in various European cities amid tight security and concerns about potential violence. The demonstration, organized by the pensioners’ movement and supported by trade unions such as the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), began at Atocha station and is making its way through the city toward Calle Alcalá, near the Sevilla metro station.
Protesters are calling for pensions that ensure a decent standard of living for both current retirees and future generations. Their demands include linking pension increases to actual inflation rates, raising the minimum pension to match the minimum wage, addressing the gender pension gap, and safeguarding the public pension system from privatization.
Furthermore, the CGT is advocating for easier access to early retirement without financial penalties for workers who have contributed for at least 35 years. The union is also pushing for the repeal of several pension reforms implemented since 2011.
Europe on Alert Amid Weekend of Protests
The Madrid rally coincides with a broader wave of protests across Europe, addressing various political and economic issues. In France, authorities have deployed 70,000 police officers and gendarmes to manage heightened tensions, particularly surrounding demonstrations against Marine Le Pen’s National Rally congress in Orléans.
Meanwhile, in Italy, security measures have been intensified, with 1,500 officers stationed in Rome and 1,800 in Milan in response to protests against rising living costs and government policies. Authorities are on high alert following violent clashes reported on October 17 and 18, which have led to increased security precautions in major cities.
While the protests underscore distinct local demands, they also reflect growing political and economic tensions across Europe. Governments are facing increasing pressure concerning living standards, public spending, and social policies, as citizens express their grievances through demonstrations.
