SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and landslides in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals and isolating numerous communities, officials reported on Tuesday.
In Haiti’s southwestern region, the Civil Protection Agency confirmed four fatalities and reported two people missing. The flooding has impacted over 3,200 families and led to the destruction of hundreds of homes. Additionally, landslides have obstructed several roads in the affected areas, complicating rescue efforts.
In the Dominican Republic, the Emergency Operations Center indicated that at least 30 communities are currently cut off due to the flooding, with more than 100 homes inundated. The rains have been attributed to a low-pressure system moving through the northern Caribbean.
Both nations are located on the island of Hispaniola and have been significantly impacted by the recent weather events. As officials continue to assess the damage and respond to the crisis, further updates are expected as the situation develops.
