VICENZA, Italy – The Vicenza Cougars have reclaimed the DODEA-Europe Division II volleyball title after defeating the American Overseas School of Rome (AOSR) 25-18, 27-25, 25-18 in the championship match held on Saturday, October 31, 2026. This victory marks a significant comeback for Vicenza, who lost the championship last year.
Coach John Kohut praised his team’s performance, particularly highlighting sophomore Alessandra Macy’s contributions. Macy recorded 16 kills, five blocks, eight digs, and two aces during the match.
“For sure, you’ve got to be able to match up with the other team’s top hitter,” Kohut said, recognizing Macy’s importance in the game’s outcome.
Macy reflected on her growth, stating, “Last year, I was a freshman and just kind of feeling my way. But I’m not someone who feels that I’ve become good enough and am happy with that. I’ve always wanted to be better.” She attributed her improved confidence to her enhanced hitting skills.
Kohut noted that Macy’s success is also due to her participation in Italian volleyball, which provides her with additional experience. “She’s got good coaching from Italians and me, with 47 years of experience,” he said with a smile.
Teammate Isabell Green also acknowledged Macy’s development. “She’s improved so much this year,” Green said. As one of the team’s primary setters and a middle blocker, Green often relies on Macy during critical moments in matches.
The final match saw moments of tension, especially in the second set, when AOSR rallied from a 24-21 deficit to tie the score at 24. However, Vicenza secured the set after a critical block by Green.
The Falcons, who had earlier defeated defending champions Black Forest Academy in a challenging five-set semifinal, were unable to sustain their momentum in the third set. Coach Claudio Olivieri expressed that while his team could have performed better, reaching the finals exceeded his expectations for the season.
Gloria Olivieri from AOSR was named the tournament MVP, with teammate Carolina Poddighe recognized as all-tournament. Alessandra Macy and Emily Bell from Vicenza also earned all-tournament honors, alongside players from other schools including Black Forest Academy and Aviano.
This championship win reaffirms Vicenza’s position in the league as they look forward to next season, establishing a stronger foundation moving ahead.
