Ukraine has intensified its aerial campaign against Russian infrastructure, targeting the nation’s largest online retailer, Wildberries. Over the past two weeks, drone strikes have hit more than a dozen of the retailer’s warehouses, aiming to impact Russia’s war capabilities and economic stability.

Details of the Attacks

The offensive began with initial strikes on July 18 in Elektrostal, located just east of Moscow, and later expanded to facilities in the Tambov region. Following these attacks, additional strikes occurred in various locations across western and southern Russia, as well as in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Reports indicate that the attacks have resulted in nine fatalities and numerous injuries.

Wildberries, which was launched in 2004 by Tatyana Kim, has grown to dominate the Russian online retail market, accounting for 52% of all online orders. The platform, which supports both small and large businesses, offers a range of products, including clothing, appliances, and travel services. Kim’s fortune is estimated to be around $8.1 billion, according to Forbes Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that the targeted facilities were believed to be supplying the Russian military with essential gear. In contrast, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refuted these claims, asserting that Ukraine was attacking civilian sites.

The series of attacks on Wildberries has raised concerns among small business owners, many of whom rely on the platform for sales. Reports from affected businesses indicate substantial losses due to inventory destruction in the disrupted warehouses. Wildberries, which has around 200 logistics locations, has implemented measures to assist small sellers affected by the strikes, including discounts on storage fees and expedited transfers of goods.

Analysts estimate that the damage to the attacked facilities could reach about $3 billion, translating to a significant loss of operational capacity for Wildberries. The attacks have also created a sense of instability in an already challenging economic climate for many small businesses, with rising taxes and regulatory hurdles compounding the pressures from the ongoing conflict.

Chris Weafer, CEO of Macro-Advisory Ltd., noted that while the online retail sector in Russia has expanded rapidly in the last year, the recent warehouse attacks could undermine public morale by increasing awareness and discussion about the ongoing war. As Russian citizens begin to feel more directly affected, many question the duration of the conflict and its implications for their lives.

Why It Matters

The strikes on Wildberries signify not only a strategic military action by Ukraine but also reflect the broader socio-economic ramifications of the ongoing conflict. As small businesses grapple with potential losses and uncertainty, public sentiment in Russia may shift, affecting the internal dynamics of the war effort. This highlights the interconnectedness of military actions, economic stability, and public morale in times of conflict.
