President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that an agreement has been reached regarding Hamas’ disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, he acknowledged that numerous challenges and stipulations remain in implementing this arrangement and bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in the region.

This declaration follows a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States nine months ago. Negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been largely stagnant, particularly regarding the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza.

Trump stated that the execution of this agreement would occur through structured phases. As Hamas progresses in disarming, Israeli troops are expected to withdraw, while an International Stabilization Force will collaborate with a new Palestinian police force to ensure safety and order within Gaza.

Details of the Disarmament Agreement

The president’s 20-point ceasefire plan stipulates that Hamas must surrender its weapons and dismantle its tunnel network. This plan also outlines the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the establishment of a new Palestinian government, and the reconstruction of Gaza.

On Friday, a Hamas representative confirmed the group’s agreement to disarm, a crucial component of the ceasefire terms. However, Israel has not publicly acknowledged this development.

Officials from the U.S. and the Board of Peace, which has been tasked with overseeing the ceasefire, expressed optimism about the agreement. Despite their enthusiasm, no specific timelines have been provided for Hamas’ disarmament. They do, however, anticipate that the local police force will turn over some weapons to the new Gaza administration within two weeks. Major weaponry and the dismantling of extensive tunnels, however, are expected to be addressed later, potentially taking several months to complete.

Israel has remained skeptical about Hamas’ commitment to disarmament but has been involved in the negotiating process. A U.S. official indicated that Israel was not being asked to exceed its initial commitments under Trump’s plan. Trump has conveyed disappointment should Israel fail to follow through with the agreement.

Meanwhile, the dynamics involving Iran remain unpredictable, as the country continues to grapple with its own conflicts and has reportedly advised Hamas against accepting the terms of the deal. The founding principles of Hamas have historically centered on armed resistance, complicating their willingness to surrender weapons related to this identity.

Hostilities resurfaced after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to significant casualties and escalating the conflict further. As a result of the ongoing military campaign in Gaza, a large number of Palestinian casualties have been reported, while the humanitarian situation remains dire with many Palestinians displaced from their homes.

Why It Matters: This announcement highlights the complexities and ongoing challenges in addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, as well as the intricate dynamics involving Hamas, Israel, and regional powers such as Iran. The degree to which this agreement can be effectively implemented remains uncertain amidst ongoing military operations and political tensions.
