Bruno Rearte, director of Ente Turistico Rosario, noted that while the city may lack natural wonders, it has Messi, who plays a crucial role in introducing Rosario to a worldwide audience. “We may not have the tallest mountain here or the most famous beach,” he stated, emphasizing the unique advantage they have with Messi as a local hero.
Rosario, situated in the fertile Pampa region along the Paraná River, has recently implemented measures to reduce crime by increasing security within its prisons and enhancing police presence in neighborhoods affected by drug-related violence. As crime rates have begun to decline, city officials are also focusing on showcasing its cultural heritage and attractions.
The city features numerous murals dedicated to Messi and markers of his early life, including his childhood home and Club Atlético Grandoli, where he began playing soccer. “We had journalists from Buenos Aires wearing bulletproof vests as they did live shots from the center of the city,” Rearte recalled, reflecting on the tough past the city has faced.

Though Rosario is on the path to rebranding itself, Flor Wolf, a local hostel owner, acknowledged that rebuilding trust in the city’s image takes time. She expressed hope that visitors will come to appreciate not only the locations significant to Messi but also the vibrant community that raised him. “You’re going to feel happy here,” she affirmed, noting that even Messi often returns to his hometown.
