Sian Clifford is making waves as a standout performer in the new film “Lady,” which premiered in select theaters on October 2. In her latest role, she portrays Lady Isabella of Ravenhyde, a character who joins the ranks of social media influencers with a unique twist. “I’m very introverted, so I find fame very difficult,” Clifford said during her promotional visit to Manhattan.
Clifford, well-known for her award-winning role as Claire in Amazon Prime’s “Fleabag,” takes on the character of Lady Isabella, who likens herself to “the aristocracy’s answer to the Kardashians.” In the film, Isabella aspires to be internet-famous and hires a struggling director named Sam, played by Laurie Kynaston, to document her life at the opulent Ravenhyde Hall in Norfolk, England.
In a satirical moment from the film, Lady Isabella recalls an old friend who has taken to calling herself an influencer, despite being a “bed-wetter into her teens.” She remarks, “Chucking out the content, mostly table-scaping. And I thought, ‘Well, I can do that.’” The film navigates the absurdities of social media fame and the often superficial nature of content creation.
“Lady,” directed by Samuel Abrahams and co-written with his partner Miranda Campbell Bowling, incorporates elements of mockumentary and absurdism. Clifford explained that Abrahams was inspired to create the film after encountering a YouTuber who obsessively documents her everyday life for an audience of virtually no one. This inspiration highlights the film’s timely exploration of society’s insatiable desire for visibility and recognition.
As Lady Isabella confronts the challenges of her pursuit of fame, the film offers a comedic yet poignant look at what it means to be seen in a world dominated by social media. Audiences can expect a blend of humor and reflection on contemporary social dynamics.
The film’s release marks a notable addition to Clifford’s impressive acting repertoire, further solidifying her status as a talented performer on both stage and screen.
