This summer, extreme wildfires have ravaged parts of Europe and North America, yet globally the total number of these fires has seen a marked decline. Experts attribute this contrasting trend to improved fire management practices in Africa and Asia, which have led to significantly lower global emissions linked to burning. Fire scientist Mike Flannigan of Thompson Rivers University noted the apparent paradox: increased local fire occurrences while global statistics show record lows.

Spain is experiencing its largest wildfire on record, spanning over 193 square miles. Similarly, wildfires across Europe are nearing the previous all-time high recorded in 2025. In North America, land burned by wildfires this summer significantly exceeds the 10-year average, recording at least a 25% increase, with smoke affecting air quality substantially across several regions, including Canada and the United States.

Fires decrease in Africa and Asia

While North America and Europe experience worsening wildfires, countries in Africa and Asia are reporting a decrease in fire activity. Mark Parrington, a senior scientist at the Copernicus climate center, attributes this decline to shifts in agricultural practices and changing demographics. For example, sub-Saharan Africa has seen dramatic reductions in fire activity due to land use changes, while many regions in Asia have adjusted the use of fire in land clearing for agriculture.

According to the Copernicus climate center, global emissions from biomass burning are at their lowest levels since satellite measurements began nearly 25 years ago, sitting at approximately half of what they were in the early 2000s. This global decrease is primarily rooted in reduced fire activity in Africa, which historically has been a dominant contributor to global fire emissions, accounting for over three-quarters of total emissions from burning plant material.

While Africa and Asia demonstrate effective fire management strategies, experts warn of the challenges presented by climate change in North America and Europe. Higher temperatures and drier conditions are fueling increasingly intense fires in these regions, exacerbated by climate factors that lengthen the fire season and create ideal conditions for fire spread.

El Niño and future fire risks

Looking ahead, the anticipated development of a strong El Niño weather pattern poses further risks for fire activity, particularly in tropical regions like the Amazon and Southeast Asia. While El Niño may contribute to wetter conditions in parts of the U.S., it can also facilitate increased grass growth in arid regions, creating additional fuel for future wildfires. Experts emphasize the necessity for improved planning and adaptation strategies in North America and Europe to mitigate the impacts of worsening wildfire seasons.

Why It Matters

The implications of increasing wildfire activity are profound, affecting ecosystems, air quality, and human communities. Understanding the dynamics of fire management and climate impacts is vital for developing effective strategies to address these emerging challenges.
