HOUSTON — Tatsuya Imai, a right-handed pitcher for the Houston Astros, has publicly acknowledged difficulties adapting to life in the United States, which may be impacting his performance on the baseball field. The 27-year-old player has been sidelined with right arm fatigue and shared insights through his interpreter, Shio Enomoto.

Enomoto stated, “He’s not able to adjust to the American lifestyle,” indicating that the challenges extend beyond baseball into everyday life, possibly contributing to Imai’s ongoing arm issues. Imai, who signed a three-year, $54 million contract in the off-season, has recorded a 7.27 ERA over 8 2/3 innings in his initial major league appearances.

Injury Status and Adjustments

After making three starts, Imai was placed on the injured list. Manager Joe Espada reported that medical imaging of Imai’s arm showed positive results, although a timeline for his return to a throwing program remains undetermined. Espada noted that while Imai’s arm strength is currently not at an optimal level, progress is being made and further evaluations are planned.

In his most recent outing against the Seattle Mariners, Imai struggled significantly, managing to record only one out. He commented on the hard mound at T-Mobile Park and the challenges presented by the 64-degree weather, conditions he found uncommon compared to those in Japan.

Imai’s transition as the first player the Astros have signed directly from Nippon Professional Baseball brings with it expectations for adjustment to a different culture and league structure. During spring training, Imai demonstrated promising performances and actively engaged with teammates, despite voicing concerns regarding the different characteristics of major league baseballs. Team officials accommodated his preferences, allowing him to follow a routine reminiscent of his previous experiences in Japan.

When asked about future adjustments to his training schedule, Imai indicated he would not significantly change his routine, even after experiencing arm fatigue. He maintained his approach of pitching on five days of rest, typical in NPB, contrasting with the standard practice in major league baseball.

Imai attributed some of his challenges to travel logistics and meal timing, reflecting on the differences between Japanese and American baseball cultures. He noted that the Astros’ recent three-city, 10-game road trip posed unique obstacles when it came to managing personal routines.

“He thought it would be the same as in Japan,” Enomoto said, adding that Imai views his current situation as a positive opportunity for growth and adjustment.

Why It Matters: Imai’s ability to adapt to American culture and major league play is crucial for both his personal well-being and the Astros’ success. As the team navigates continued injuries among starting pitchers, understanding Imai’s experience could inform how clubs support international players transitioning to new environments.
