Alpha Diallo is joining the Denver Nuggets after five successful seasons with Monaco, where he earned the EuroLeague Best Defender award. The 29-year-old forward looks forward to contributing to the Nuggets alongside two-time MVP Nikola Jokic.
Diallo, known for his defensive prowess, is confident that his skill set will translate well to the NBA as he embraces this new opportunity. “I think my all-around game will show as the season goes on,” Diallo said. “I can bring a lot of different things. It will depend on what the coaches need me to do.” His emphasis on versatile defense aligns with his previous successes in Europe.
Connection to Colorado
This transition is also a return to his roots for Diallo, who grew up in Colorado and attended Denver West High School. He recalled his upbringing in the state, which adds a personal layer to his move to the Nuggets.
Diallo believes that the fundamental elements of European basketball, particularly defensive tactics, will serve him well in the NBA. “You have to put pressure on the ball, move your feet, stay between your opponent and the basket, and contest shots,” he explained, reflecting on the habits he developed during his time in Europe.
Familiar Tactics in a New Environment
The forward has noticed a comparable tactical environment in the Nuggets organization. He described head coach Michael Malone’s style as reminiscent of European coaching methods. “I would say he’s a little like a European coach. He’s very intense. He pushes players, but he also knows how to encourage them,” Diallo said.
Despite not yet being widely known among NBA fans and players, Diallo is eager to establish his reputation on the court. He stated, “When I’m assigned to guard someone, if they don’t know who I am, hopefully they’ll find out very quickly.” With his competitive spirit and determination, Diallo is poised to make a notable impact this season.
