Aston Villa has officially secured the signing of Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for a reported fee of €55 million. The 18-year-old forward from Senegal has committed to a five-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year.
This acquisition marks a significant addition to Aston Villa’s roster amid a summer of considerable player turnover at Villa Park, as several key players, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, and Emiliano Martinez, have departed during the current transfer window.
Manager Unai Emery has been active in seeking replacements to bolster the team’s performance, and Mbaye joins fellow arrivals Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Alejandro Garnacho in the Midlands.
Reports indicate that the agreement between Aston Villa and PSG was facilitated in part by the strong working relationship between Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Liverpool also expressed interest in Mbaye after a productive season in which he scored three goals and provided two assists across 31 competitive matches for PSG.
Last season, Mbaye made ten starts in Ligue 1 and featured in one Champions League match. He is also noted for being the youngest player to start a match for PSG. With 15 caps and four goals for the Senegal national team, he has represented his country in significant tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, where he notably scored against France.
Mbaye originally joined PSG’s youth academy in 2018 from FC Versailles 78 and made his senior debut at the age of 16 in August 2024.
Villa land long-standing target
The acquisition of Mbaye had been a priority for Aston Villa; he was considered a key candidate for the squad before the club signed Alejandro Garnacho. The team sought a versatile forward capable of stretching rival defenses, particularly from the right flank. Despite earlier interest from other clubs and the complexities regarding price, Aston Villa was persistent in their pursuit of Mbaye.
Since January, the club has been tracking his progress, acknowledging his potential and talent, which fit the tactical requirements of the team after the departure of Jadon Sancho. The addition of Mbaye, alongside the recent signing of Nicolas Jackson, aims to strengthen the offensive lineup following significant changes to the squad.
The signing of Ibrahim Mbaye represents Aston Villa’s commitment to enhancing its competitive edge in the Premier League. By securing a young and talented international player, the club aims to rebuild its roster with a focus on long-term success, while also responding to recent player departures. Mbaye’s track record and potential growth could prove crucial for Villa’s ambitions in the coming seasons.
