At least 68 people have died in a train crash in Spain, according to officials. The accident occurred in the vicinity of Toledo, where rescue operations are underway.
A large emergency response has been mobilized, with a continuous flow of ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks arriving at the scene. Helicopters can be seen flying low over the area as efforts to aid victims continue.
Officers from the Civil Guard, some dressed in white protective suits typically worn by forensic personnel, are actively investigating the crash site. Evidence is being collected among twisted metal remnants of the two colliding trains, while broken cables and fallen utility poles litter the surroundings.
Clergy members from the region have also arrived to provide support. The Rev. Luis Lucendo, a vicar in Toledo, shared his experience: “We came to pray for the dead.” He recounted a heartbreaking moment with a man who informed him that his wife had perished in the incident. “They were going to spend the day in Córdoba, but this is where their journey ended,” Father Lucendo said.
The ongoing investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision, with officials promising a thorough examination of the scene. As of now, updates on the identities of the victims and further details about the accident are expected in the coming days.
