Michael Tavarez, a prominent Dominican chef originally from New York City, has introduced a new brunch experience in Dallas’ Deep Ellum neighborhood. Known for his culinary efforts to bring Dominican and New York street food to the area, Tavarez launched Cafecito y Sazon Brunch as part of his venture, Picadera. This brunch series aims to create a lively, day-party atmosphere reminiscent of Dominican gatherings.
Bringing Dominican Culture to Dallas
After operating a ghost kitchen in Oak Cliff and winning a Big Tex Choice Award for his “Dominican fritura dog,” Tavarez established a permanent location at Trinity Cider in Deep Ellum in 2025. He identified a gap in the local day-party culture, which spurred his creative concept for a lively brunch series held weekly from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Inspired by the cultural vibrancy seen during the recent FIFA World Cup in Dallas, Tavarez noted the need to maintain that energy throughout the year. He remarked that previous events in the neighborhood lacked the daytime socializing component that has made Dominican brunches popular in New York City. Tavarez recalled that for him, brunch was about more than just eating; it was a social event filled with music and dancing.
The Cafecito y Sazon Brunch integrates elements familiar to those from Dominican culture, including a menu featuring unique textures and flavors. Guests can enjoy dishes that reflect Tavarez’s culinary background and dedication to authentic Dominican cuisine. Meals are served in a warm and welcoming environment, where patrons can expect to dance and socialize while indulging in flavorful offerings.
During a recent visit, brunch-goers enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere with a DJ providing an eclectic mix of Latin music. Initial guest favorites included a mimosa tower, the distinctive avocado toast topped with fried Dominican cheese, and pancakes de plátano maduro y salami for those looking for a hearty meal. Tavarez emphasized the importance of flavorful ingredients and cultural significance in his dishes, aiming to capture the essence of Dominican culinary traditions while appealing to a broader audience.
The brunch series has reportedly attracted a diverse crowd, with families and friends gathering to socialize, play games, and enjoy the food, embodying the communal spirit Tavarez envisioned. “We want everyone to experience our culture, our food, and our music,” he stated, signifying his commitment to fostering cultural exchange and understanding through cuisines shared at Cafecito y Sazon Brunch.
Picadera operates at 2721 Main St. in Deep Ellum, with hours of 5 – 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to midnight on Fridays, 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Why It Matters: Tavarez’s brunch series enriches the Dallas dining scene by introducing authentic Dominican culinary experiences, promoting cultural exchange, and addressing community demands for dynamic social gatherings focused on food, music, and dance.
