Fashion Forward Asia Forum Highlights Creative Voices in Fashion
The Fashion Forward Asia Forum took place at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City, building on conversations sparked during Fashion Week Asia. The event featured a panel discussion titled “The Creative Code,” moderated by Pam Quiñones, deputy editor of Vogue Philippines. The panel included Desmond Lim, editor-in-chief of Vogue Singapore, and fashion designers Toton Januar, Amina Aranaz Alunan, and Rajo Laurel.
Creative Inspiration Explored
During the discussion, each panelist shared their sources of inspiration. Toton Januar emphasized the role of emotion in his design process, stating, “Fashion is not only creating clothes, but it’s a way for me to express my emotions, my opinions through the artistic way of thinking about things.” Rajo Laurel added that new experiences fuel his creativity, noting, “For me, inspiration is really about brand new experiences.”
Amina Aranaz Alunan, on the other hand, highlighted the importance of introspection in her creative journey. “The starting point really is self-understanding, self-awareness, and then you try to go deeper and explore,” she explained.
From a publication standpoint, Desmond Lim encouraged his team to approach cultural narratives from personal perspectives, stating, “I always tell [my team] to think of culture from their own point of view.”
Transforming Ideas into Reality
The designers detailed their unique processes for turning ideas into tangible fashion. Alunan thrives under pressure, while Laurel finds it challenging. “At the beginning of every collection is the most exciting for me because it’s a chance for me to build a world,” Januar described, adding that he prefers to raise questions through his work rather than seek answers.
Alunan detailed her focus in the early stages, saying, “When you start off with a collection, you start with defining your focus.” This approach helps her set the stage for the remainder of the design process.
Worn Designs and Their Impact
As their designs transition from creation to wearer, the panelists reflected on the evolving nature of their work. “The minute it leaves the studio, you have to let go of this creation and let it live through the vocabulary of another person’s life,” Laurel stated.
Alunan emphasized the importance of humility in design, noting, “When you have a spirit of generosity, that’s also how new ideas come about.” She believes designers should remain open to interpretation and collaboration.
Advice for Emerging Designers
The discussion concluded with parting advice for emerging designers. Lim encouraged them to trust their instincts over trends, stating, “Follow your heart, not follow a trend.” Alunan added that maintaining kindness and curiosity throughout the creative process is essential. “It’s really when you start playing and letting go, that’s when the magic happens,” she asserted.
Januar reminded aspiring designers to continually seek growth beyond fashion, while Laurel concluded with a reminder to be patient and enjoy the creative journey.
