Rwanda will host Africa’s first Formula One Grand Prix since 1993 in the early 2030s, following the announcement of a decade-long partnership with the racing circuit on Tuesday.
The East African nation has actively pursued the opportunity to host a Grand Prix, utilizing football, basketball, and other sports as part of its strategy to bolster its international profile and draw investment.
This bid was officially communicated by President Paul Kagame during a gathering of the FIA, the sport’s governing body, held in Rwanda in December 2024.
Further details about the event, including the specific date and location within Rwanda, have yet to be disclosed. The announcement marks a significant milestone for both Formula One and the continent, which has not seen a Grand Prix in nearly three decades.
