Haiti’s Agriculture Ministry Distributes Seeds to Over 2,000 Farmers
The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development (MARNDR) has launched a seed distribution initiative aimed at enhancing agricultural production and addressing food insecurity in Haiti. Over 2,000 farmers in the Southe Department, including communities such as Port-à-Piment, Chardonnières, and Les Cayes, will benefit from this program.
This distribution is part of the emergency component of the Resilient Agriculture for Food Security Project (PARSA), which is funded by the World Bank. The initiative seeks to support farmers in diversifying their vegetable crops and increasing local food production.
Agronomist Thed St-Juste, serving as the Assistant for Crop Production for PARSA in the Southern Department, indicated that farmers will receive seeds for a variety of vegetables, including bell peppers, tomatoes, and papayas. This effort aims to encourage the cultivation of “home gardens,” a practice that allows households to grow food close to their residences.
As many households face challenges related to accessing diverse diets, the establishment of home gardens can improve food self-sufficiency and enhance community food security. Each municipality involved in the project will see about 100 selected farmers receive seed kits, with the number rising to 200 in areas with significant agricultural activity and existing irrigation systems.
In total, each participating farmer will receive seeds for three different types of crops, facilitating a more sustainable agricultural practice. The initiative also emphasizes collaboration with local Municipal Agricultural Offices (BAC), which assist in the selection of beneficiaries to reflect local agricultural conditions.
The program not only aims to meet nutritional needs but also strives to support the local economy by providing fresh produce and diversifying household diets. In rural areas, vegetable production is a vital income source for many families, underscoring the importance of this initiative in improving livelihoods and stimulating economic activity.
As this seed distribution progresses, the Ministry of Agriculture aims to bolster food security across these communities and foster greater resilience among the farming population.
