New York Mets prospect Jefferson Rojas has continued his impressive performance, hitting five home runs in the final 11 games of the season after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs. He has now taken his talents to the Dominican Republic, where he is playing for Gigantes Del Cibao.
In a recent game, Rojas showcased his power, hitting two home runs and finishing with three hits as Cibao defeated Tigres del Licey 7-1 at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal. The report from Rob Terranova of MLB.com highlighted Rojas’ ongoing success on the field.
Before joining Cibao, Rojas had a busy season in North America. He began his year at Double-A Knoxville, a Cubs affiliate, and then transitioned from the Southern League to the Eastern League after joining the Mets. He concluded his U.S. season with six games at Triple-A Syracuse.
Rojas has consistently demonstrated his hitting ability, posting a .274 batting average with a .338 on-base percentage and a .505 slugging percentage during his time in North America. His impressive record includes 57 extra-base hits, a career-high 27 home runs, 93 RBIs, 90 runs scored, and 21 stolen bases across 126 games.
In his first two games with Cibao, Rojas is off to a strong start, going 4-for-7 with two home runs, four runs, three RBIs, a walk, and a stolen base. His performance has produced a remarkable OPS of 2.054 early in the season.
Rojas has become a player of interest for Mets fans, particularly as the team seeks to bolster its infield with youthful talent and offensive power. While third baseman Bo Bichette has provided some offense, the double-play combination of Francisco Lindor and Marcus Semien struggled offensively during the last season, raising questions about the team’s depth going forward.
The 21-year-old Rojas was signed by the Cubs for $1 million when he came out of the Dominican Republic and has quickly climbed through the ranks of Chicago’s minor league system. He has often been the youngest player at each level, and his offensive skills are now drawing attention as he aims for a chance with the Mets next season.
The Mets are currently evaluating their roster, especially in light of Bichette’s potential opt-out decision, which he has until five days after the World Series to announce. Until then, Rojas is focused on maintaining his hitting streak.
