Haiti Issues Orange Alert for Five Departments Due to Severe Weather Conditions
On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Haiti’s General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGDPC), in conjunction with the Permanent Secretariat for Risk and Disaster Management (SPGRD), announced an Orange Alert for the West, Grand’Anse, Nippes, South, and South-East departments. Nord-Ouest and Artibonite departments were placed under a Yellow Alert.
This action was taken in response to low-pressure systems hovering over the Caribbean Sea, which have triggered heavy rainfall and strong winds across the affected regions.
The DGDPC and SPGRD warned of significant risks including flooding, landslides, rockfalls, and rough sea conditions. Certain municipalities have already reported substantial rainfall, leading authorities to take precautionary measures.
In light of these hazardous conditions, officials provided safety guidelines for residents, particularly those in high-risk areas. They advise the public to:
- Stay informed by regularly checking weather updates and official directives, avoiding reliance on unverified rumors;
- If residing near ravines or coastlines, consider relocating to a temporary shelter or a safer area;
- Find a secure location if living in areas vulnerable to landslides and connect with family members in case evacuation becomes necessary;
- Secure or bring indoors any outdoor items that could be affected by strong winds;
- Safeguard watercraft by moving them away from shorelines and securing them properly;
- Offer support to vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, disabled, and children.
As the situation evolves, the DGDPC and SPGRD will continue to monitor the weather closely and urge residents to remain vigilant and prepared for changing conditions.
