Two new presidential candidates have emerged in Haiti’s electoral landscape: Joanas Gue and René St Fort. Gue is representing the Konbit ak Aksyon Pou Ayiti Bèl (KAPAB) party, while St Fort is running under the National Reformist Party (PRN) banner. This addition brings the total number of presidential candidates to 14.
In response to security concerns, the Haitian National Police (PNH) has deployed several specialized units, including the South-East Departmental Unit for Maintaining Order (UDMO-SE) and the Anti-Gang Unit (UTAG), to K-Jack in the South-East Department. These operations are overseen by Divisional Commissioner Appolos Villette, the South-East Departmental Director.
Former Senator Youri Latortue has publicly denied allegations made by the United Nations Panel of Experts on Haiti, which links him to the Kokorat San Ras and Raboteau gangs. In an open letter dated October 7 and addressed to the UN experts and Security Council members, Latortue refuted the claims, particularly denouncing the context in which statements from a gang leader were used. He asserts that he has never been associated with the mentioned gangs, nor has he ever funded or supported any criminal activities. Latortue emphasizes the need for accusations to be substantiated by verifiable evidence, noting that he has previously been cleared of charges on three occasions by the Haitian justice system.
The community mourns the loss of Jean Massillon, the mayor of Kenscoff, who was known for his steadfast defense of citizens against local criminal groups. Former French Ambassador to Haiti Antoine Michon expressed his condolences, honoring Massillon’s commitment to his constituents and wishing peace for his family.
In health news, Dr. Phara Marie Yoleine Annesteus, the Departmental Health Director for the South, announced the launch of initiatives for “Pink October,” a month dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. The activities aim to educate women about the importance of early screening and prevention through various outreach efforts, including community campaigns and door-to-door activities.
