HD Hyundai Robotics is set to reduce robot programming costs significantly through a new collaboration with Palantir Technologies, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and human engineering expertise. The companies aim to achieve more than a 50% reduction in programming expenses.
During a keynote address at Palantir’s recent Sovereignty Bootcamp in New York, Ahn Sung-hwan, chief technology officer and vice president of HD Hyundai Robotics, detailed their combined strategy to employ physical AI in robot programming.
The partnership will employ AI agents to analyze current robot programs and suggest enhancements. Human engineers will then fine-tune these AI-generated solutions based on their practical experiences, fundamentally transforming problem-solving workflows on factory floors.
Historically, skilled engineers were required to physically observe robots and make repetitive adjustments to work sequences, movement paths, and speeds, which complicated standardization. With the integration of AI, HD Hyundai Robotics reported a reduction in the average task completion time from 21.5 days to 7.9 days since the AI agents were introduced in August.
Additionally, HD Hyundai Robotics plans to develop field engineers into “on-site solution experts,” expanding their roles beyond just robot programming and installation to include defining issues and implementing AI-driven solutions.
Regular steering committee meetings involving senior executives from both companies are scheduled to prioritize joint projects and explore further applications that could yield measurable benefits.
The Sovereignty Bootcamp discussed methods for companies to safeguard their data while leveraging AI to enhance competitiveness. Approximately 450 executives from around 250 organizations have participated in the three editions of the bootcamp since July.
Ahn expressed the company’s commitment to broadening its physical AI capabilities, stating, “We are continuing to expand cooperation with global companies to further strengthen our physical AI capabilities. We plan to broaden the applications of our physical AI solutions business by identifying projects that can solve problems on-site more quickly and effectively.”
Ryan Taylor, Palantir’s chief revenue officer, praised the partnership, highlighting that HD Hyundai Robotics’ transition to a physical AI company is reshaping its customer problem-solving approach and is expected to create new business opportunities.
