Haiti is experiencing a dramatic increase in hunger as gang violence, soaring food prices, and a potent El Niño effect exacerbate the country’s ongoing crisis. According to the United Nations, an estimated 5.2 million people face acute food insecurity, representing over 40% of the population.
The deteriorating security situation has made it increasingly difficult for humanitarian organizations to deliver critical aid. Armed gangs currently control large areas of the capital, Port-au-Prince, contributing to a chaotic environment where civilians often endure violence and theft. The UN indicated that violent crime has severely disrupted both markets and transportation routes, further complicating food distribution efforts.
In addition to violence, soaring food prices are straining households across Haiti. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported that food prices in the country have surged by more than 23% over the past year, making it difficult for families to access basic necessities. The cost of staple foods, including rice and beans, has reached unprecedented levels, prompting increased reliance on international assistance.
The situation is compounded by the effects of El Niño, which has led to irregular rainfall patterns. Experts warn that this climatic phenomenon could worsen food shortages by affecting agricultural productivity, particularly for subsistence farming communities that rely heavily on seasonal rainfall.
In response, international organizations, including the World Food Programme (WFP), have mobilized efforts to provide emergency food aid to those in need. The WFP has reported distributing emergency rations to families, but officials emphasize that the scale of assistance falls short of what is required to meet the growing demand.
Haitian officials are calling for urgent support, stressing the need for a coordinated international response to address the complex humanitarian crisis. Without immediate action, the number of those affected by hunger is expected to continue to rise as the situation unfolds.
