Illinois Triumphs Over Nebraska, 24-13
In a closely contested match at Gies Memorial Stadium, the University of Illinois secured a 24-13 victory against Nebraska on Friday night. This win improved Illinois’ record to 5-3, bringing them one step closer to bowl eligibility.
The game featured significant moments, including a drive by Illinois that concluded with a field goal by Ethan Moczulski. Following a 58-yard connection between quarterback Katin Houser and receiver Collin Dixon, Illinois extended its lead to 24-13 after maintaining possession for 10 plays covering 76 yards.
Nebraska, which had initially taken the lead, narrowed the gap when quarterback Anthony Colandrea connected with Jacory Barney Jr. for a 51-yard touchdown. However, their attempt for a two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving them down 21-14.
Illinois responded effectively, with Houser completing 20 of 30 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns throughout the game. One of his notable completions was a six-yard pass to Dixon, who finished the match with two touchdowns, breaking the single-season program record with his 11th score of the year.
The Cornhuskers struggled to capitalize on several drives, recording multiple penalties that thwarted their offensive efforts. Nebraska’s missed opportunities included failing to convert on a fourth-and-short situation, resulting in a turnover on downs after a pass attempt by Colandrea was tipped by an Illinois defender.
Illinois was also challenged by injuries, with center Jake Renfro suffering a leg injury during the match. His absence was felt as Brandon Henderson took over the position, with Champ Smith stepping in at right guard.
The game started slowly, with Nebraska scoring first on a lengthy drive capped by Mekhi Nelson’s 15-yard touchdown run. Illinois responded, with Houser navigating a tricky fake field goal play that set the stage for Jordan Anderson’s touchdown reception, putting the Fighting Illini back in contention.
Looking ahead, Illinois aims to continue its winning streak and solidify its bowl eligibility for a third consecutive season. The victory also marks an important turnaround for head coach Bret Bielema, especially after an earlier slump in the season.
