Vote counting in the Senate races of Mississippi and Alaska is still underway, with results too close to call in both states. As of now, Democratic candidate Scott Colom holds a narrow lead over incumbent Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi.
According to CNN Sightline, the Mississippi Senate race is officially rated as neutral, reflecting the tight competition. Colom has expressed confidence in his lead, stating, “I am 100% confident” he will be victorious due to the outstanding ballots located in Democratic-leaning counties. Despite this, Mississippi Republican Party Chairman has claimed there are thousands of affidavit ballots yet to be counted, suggesting that Hyde-Smith may have the opportunity to regain her position.
On Friday, multiple Mississippi organizations called for increased transparency during the ballot-counting process, reporting challenges in their efforts to observe how much of the operation is accessible to the public. However, elections expert David Becker described the ongoing counting as “entirely normal” and consistent with expectations for election processes.
In Alaska, the Senate race is also unfolding with Democrat Mary Peltola showing a slight edge against Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan. Recent developments have raised concerns as federal prosecutors have ordered Gerald Heikes, a minor candidate in the race, to testify before a grand jury regarding political activities. This move is linked to a criminal investigation into allegations that operatives aligned with Peltola attempted to recruit spoiler candidates for the election.
Peltola has denied knowledge of any efforts to bring in other candidates and has not been implicated in the investigation. The Department of Justice has not commented on the matter, which adds an unexpected layer of complexity to the Alaskan race.
The national attention on both Mississippi and Alaska reflects broader implications for control of the Senate, with these elections being pivotal for the upcoming legislative session. The results of the continuing ballot counting are expected to unfold in the coming days, indicating a determined push from both parties to secure their victories.
