The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has called for the establishment of a stable political process in Haiti following the conclusion of the Transitional Presidential Council’s mandate. In a statement released on February 10, 2026, CARICOM urged national stakeholders to collaborate towards restoring security, preparing for elections, and addressing the humanitarian crisis affecting the country.
The Transitional Council stepped down after a two-year term, with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and the Council of Ministers assuming governance during the interim period. CARICOM emphasized that the future of Haiti must be determined through a process that is led and owned by Haitians, fostering consultation and dialogue among political parties, civil society, and the general public.
According to CARICOM, key priorities include enhancing security, intensifying election preparations, and promoting social and economic recovery. The organization highlighted the urgency of addressing the humanitarian challenges faced by millions of Haitians, endorsing Fils-Aimé’s commitment to providing food, healthcare, and shelter for vulnerable populations. It stressed that improvements in security and the protection of human dignity must progress in tandem.
The departure of the Transitional Council poses new challenges for Haiti, a nation grappling with widespread gang violence, institutional weaknesses, and frequent delays in the electoral process. CARICOM reiterated that bridging political divisions and reaching a consensus on a credible transitional governance framework are vital for restoring democracy in the country.
The regional body pledged to continue its engagement with Haitian stakeholders through its Eminent Persons Group, assisting in efforts to establish a viable political process. CARICOM reaffirmed its commitment to Haiti as part of the Caribbean Community.
CARICOM’s heads of government are set to meet with Prime Minister Fils-Aimé during their 50th Regular Meeting in St. Kitts and Nevis from February 24 to 27, 2026, to further discuss Haiti’s priorities and the path forward.
