Indian boxers are gearing up for the upcoming Asian Games with an intensive training camp at NS NIS Patiala. The camp features a multinational collaboration, including boxers from the Dominican Republic and Iran, aimed at enhancing the skill set of the Indian team ahead of the competition in Japan.
International Training Collaboration
Over the past two days, ten boxers from the Dominican Republic, consisting of seven men and three women, have been training alongside the Indian contingent, which includes notable athletes like Sachin Siwach. In addition, three male boxers from Iran joined the camp on Tuesday.
The Dominican Republic’s team includes two Olympic medallists: Cristian Pinales (90 kg) and Junior Alcantara (55 kg), both of whom bring valuable experience and skills that could provide a challenging sparring environment for the Indian athletes. This collaboration is seen as a beneficial opportunity for Indian pugilists to sharpen their abilities against high-caliber opponents. Jadumani Singh (55 kg), who secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, is among those who stand to gain from this experience.
Santiago Nieva, the head coach of the Indian women’s boxing team, acknowledged the importance of such interactions, stating, “There are some strong boxers from the Dominican Republic, and the boys had sparring sessions with them. They are not our direct rivals, and it’s good to have them.”
Pinales recently achieved a significant victory over two-time Olympic champion Julio Cesar La Cruz of Cuba during the Central American and Caribbean Games, highlighting his competitive edge.
The Indian boxing team is approaching the Asian Games following a successful stint at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they secured multiple medals, including golds for athletes like Sachin Siwach (60 kg) and Ankush Panghal (80 kg). Additionally, five female boxers from India also won gold medals in that event.
Following the current training in Patiala, the Indian team plans to travel to Japan shortly to participate in an exposure camp with potential competitors. The team is expected to depart on September 8, which will further prepare them for the challenges they may face at the continental championship.
Why It Matters: The collaborative training efforts not only bolster the confidence and skills of the Indian boxers but also foster international sports relationships, providing critical competitive exposure ahead of a significant event like the Asian Games.
