A new documentary series entitled Africa: Earth’s Wild Home aims to provide viewers with a fresh perspective on African wildlife, showcasing lesser-known species and environments. Produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit in collaboration with National Geographic, the series is set to premiere on October 2, 2023.
Exploring the Diversity of Africa
Showrunner Gavin Boyland noted that the series seeks to broaden the depiction of Africa beyond the iconic imagery typically associated with the continent, such as lions and elephants. By focusing on a range of species and landscapes, the production intends to present a more comprehensive view of African wildlife. The series was filmed over nearly four years and encompasses almost 30 countries.
Boyland explained that the goal was not only to capture spectacular wildlife footage but also to tell the individual stories of various animals and their habitats. This approach emerged from Boyland’s discussions with National Geographic, emphasizing the desire to explore diverse aspects of the worlds being filmed.
“It felt like a really fresh time to re-explore what is a continent that people always associate with wildlife,” Boyland stated. The team aimed to provide new storytelling opportunities by visiting lesser-known areas, gathering insights from local guides, and utilizing recent research to inform their filming locations.
Filming in remote areas, such as the Sahara or West Africa, allowed the crew to discover captivating wildlife encounters. Boyland remarked that some of the most striking moments in the series were unpredictable and captured unique animal behaviors, underscoring the inherent surprises nature can offer. One memorable sequence features golden wolves on an island in Senegal, showcasing a hunting strategy amidst a large group of pelicans.
The series features advancements in filming technology, including the use of drones, which enabled the filmmakers to present the landscapes in a cinematic manner. This tactic provided a sense of immersion, bringing audiences closer to the environments being depicted.
In addition to highlighting animal behavior, Africa: Earth’s Wild Home aims to foster connection through stories that resonate with viewers. Boyland emphasized the importance of maintaining factual integrity while crafting emotional narratives around the struggles faced by wildlife. The series reflects the ethical concerns associated with wildlife filmmaking and avoids anthropomorphizing animal experiences.
Ultimately, Boyland hopes the series will spark interest in conservation efforts across Africa. Viewers are introduced to conservationists and communities dedicated to protecting wildlife, leading to a hopeful message about the future of these species.
Why It Matters: The documentary series not only seeks to enrich viewers’ understanding of African wildlife but also aims to inspire engagement in conservation practices. By broadening the narrative beyond well-known symbols of the continent, it offers insights into both the challenges and triumphs of wildlife protection amidst India’s diverse ecosystems.
Africa: Earth’s Wild Home will air on National Geographic on October 2, 2023, and subsequently be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu starting October 3, 2023.
