Ken Burns recently presented “An Evening with Ken Burns” at the Spoleto Festival, highlighting key elements of American history in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event featured a 12-piece ensemble led by Grammy Award-winning violinist Johnny Gandelsman, who has served as the music producer for Burns’ documentary series “The American Revolution.” The ensemble included members of the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra.
During the performance, Tony Award-winning actor Denis O’Hare contributed narration to complement the musical elements. Attendees were treated to clips from Burns’ documentary, which included depictions of the Battle of Long Island, the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, and the Siege of Charleston. Burns emphasized that the latter is among the most critical moments of the American Revolution.
“As I say to my friends, this is not just the revolution; it’s the most consequential in all of world history, I believe, that will set off revolutions for more than two centuries to come,” Burns remarked, also citing Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of Vietnamese independence, which referenced the American Declaration of Independence.
Burns stressed the harsh realities of the revolution, stating that it was a violent conflict that deeply affected families and communities. “We’ve spent a good deal of the last 250 years trying to pretend that our revolution was just about big ideas… but it was a bloody, bloody war, and no bloodier than what it was in South Carolina,” he added.
The documentary series now streaming on PBS explores not only the military struggles for independence but also how these conflicts influenced global discussions around democracy, civil rights, and personal liberties. This focus on South Carolina serves to remind audiences of the state’s significant role in shaping these historical narratives.
The presentation at Spoleto Festival USA aimed to deepen understanding of the complexities surrounding the American Revolution, weaving together music and historical reflection during this milestone anniversary.
