Joanne Jayanti Vengadesan, a Malaysian-born lawyer, has been elected to lead Multilaw, a major international law firm network based in the UK. This appointment is a notable achievement for Vengadesan, who specializes in technology and artificial intelligence.
Vengadesan, 52, is currently a partner at the London law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper. She was elected Chair-Elect at Multilaw’s Global Conference held in Prague earlier this month. She will assume the role of Chair in September 2027, becoming the first Malaysian to hold this position, succeeding Australian lawyer Paul Kirton from Macpherson Kelley.
Multilaw consists of independent law firms across over 100 countries and approximately 300 offices, offering international legal coverage while avoiding the structure of a single global law firm. Vengadesan’s expertise comes at a pivotal time as the fields of artificial intelligence, data regulation, and cross-border legal services evolve within the legal profession.
At Penningtons Manches Cooper, Vengadesan heads the Technology Sector group, where she focuses on matters related to AI and technology. Her legal career began in Kuala Lumpur; she was admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 1997, practicing initially in intellectual property law before relocating to the UK, where she has worked for around 25 years.
Vengadesan, the daughter of Malaysian diplomat Datuk R. Vengadesan, has a diverse background, having spent time in Belgium and Thailand during her upbringing. She has maintained strong ties to Malaysia, including delivering talks to the Malaysian Bar on topics like AI and digital transformation.
Adam Cooke, Multilaw’s chief executive, expressed his support for Vengadesan’s election, noting her extensive experience and understanding of the relationships that are essential to the network. Her role as chair highlights the increasing significance of technology expertise in the leadership of international law firms.
As independent firms navigate the complexities of cross-border legal matters, networks like Multilaw are becoming vital alternatives to the traditional, costly infrastructure of large global legal firms. Vengadesan’s focus on AI and technology may prove especially valuable in this changing landscape.
