Inspection Operations Conducted at Gas Stations in Port-au-Prince
On September 18, 2026, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, James Monazard, mobilized around ten inspectors from the Directorate of Quality Control and Consumer Protection (DCQPC) to carry out inspections at various gas stations in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince. This initiative is aimed at enhancing consumer rights protection and ensuring compliance with product standards in the market.
The inspections were initiated in response to numerous complaints regarding potentially adulterated fuel. The primary focus of the inspection teams was to verify the conformity of the gas stations and to collect fuel samples from their pumps for subsequent laboratory analysis.
During the operations, inspectors documented essential information to trace the fuel samples they collected. They also performed visual and olfactory assessments on-site prior to collecting samples for further examination. These procedures aim to provide the Ministry with reliable technical data regarding the quality of the fuel and to inform any necessary actions based on the analysis results.
This operation underscores the Ministry’s commitment to reinforce oversight mechanisms, ensure compliance with established standards, and enhance protection for consumers. To further assist consumers, the Ministry has introduced a complaint collection system for motorists who may have experienced damage due to the purchase of tainted fuel.
Consumers wishing to lodge a complaint are encouraged to specify the service station involved, its address, the date of refueling, and any issues encountered with their vehicles. They may also include receipts or other relevant documentation to support their claims.
Through these efforts, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry aims to strengthen consumer trust and establish better regulatory practices within the fuel supply sector.
Why It Matters
This inspection initiative is crucial for safeguarding public health and consumer rights in Haiti, especially in a context where fuel quality is vital for vehicle performance and safety. The proactive measures taken by the Ministry highlight the importance of regulatory oversight in maintaining product standards and protecting consumers from potential fraud.
