Newcastle United is reportedly preparing to finalize the sale of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75 million (approximately $100.95 million or €87.48 million). This agreement marks a significant development in the ongoing transfer discussions between the two clubs.
Initially, Arsenal proposed a much lower fee, while Newcastle sought a higher amount. However, sources indicate that both clubs are close to reaching a mutually acceptable compromise, enabling the 28-year-old player to make his intended move to north London. The reported transfer amount does not include any add-ons.
Lyon, Guimaraes’ previous club, is set to receive 20 percent of Newcastle’s profit from the transfer, estimated to be between £6 million and £7 million.
According to a report from The Athletic on Tuesday, the two clubs are nearing a complete agreement regarding Guimaraes. While he was attending a pre-season training camp in Spain, he awaits authorization for a medical examination with Arsenal.
Transfer Timeline
In early July, Guimaraes expressed his desire to leave Newcastle for Arsenal, which had initially shown a willingness to pay up to £60 million for the Brazilian international. A verbal offer below this amount was ultimately rejected by Newcastle, who had insisted they would not entertain offers for the player.
Guimaraes has approximately two years remaining on his contract with Newcastle, having joined the club in January 2022 from Lyon in a deal worth €50 million, including add-ons. His contract once included a temporary release clause set at £100 million, but that option expired in June 2024 without being utilized.
The anticipated exit of Guimaraes marks another significant departure from Newcastle this summer. Following Eddie Howe’s exit from the head coach position, Matthias Jaissle from Al Ahli is expected to take over. In addition to Guimaraes, Newcastle has sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for €80 million and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for £100 million. The club has also experienced setbacks in their pursuit of other players, notably missing out on Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi, who joined Aston Villa, and Victor Munoz, who opted for Liverpool.
Guimaraes has made 153 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, scoring 30 goals and providing 26 assists. He played a pivotal role during the 2026 World Cup, starting all five matches and contributing four assists.
In response to Guimaraes’ potential departure, Newcastle has already signed 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax for approximately €25 million and 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba from Monaco in a deal potentially worth up to €40 million. Additionally, Newcastle has faced a rejected bid of around £46 million from Tottenham for midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who is also a target for Nottingham Forest.
