The President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), H.E. Dr. Fateh Boutbig, is leading a delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York City. The event, taking place from September 22 to 29, 2026, coincides with the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, where the delegation aims to promote African perspectives and reinforce the role of parliamentary diplomacy in international discussions.
Objectives and Engagements at UNGA81
The PAP aims to advance discussions on various critical issues, including climate action, pandemic preparedness, and human rights, during its participation at UNGA81. The delegation’s engagements will include a General Debate and high-level meetings focused on specific topics such as the right to development and the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
In addition to discussions, H.E. Dr. Boutbig is scheduled to deliver keynote addresses at notable events, such as Heal@UNGA81 and the Global Distinguished Leadership Award Ceremony. The President will emphasize the role of legislative leadership in fostering climate-resilient economies.
Dr. Boutbig articulated the importance of the PAP’s involvement, stating, “The Pan-African Parliament carries the voices and aspirations of the African people. Our participation in the United Nations General Assembly is an opportunity to ensure that African priorities are reflected in global discussions.”
Moreover, the PAP delegation will engage in bilateral meetings and courtesy calls on the sidelines of the assembly to strengthen cooperative ties with African Union institutions and other diplomatic entities. This mission is aligned with the objectives outlined in the PAP Strategic Plan 2024–2028, aiming to enhance the Parliament’s influence in international decision-making processes.
As the legislative body of the African Union, the PAP’s participation at UNGA81 underscores its commitment to advocating for inclusive global governance that prioritizes Africa’s developmental needs and aspirations.
Why It Matters: The participation of the PAP at the UN General Assembly is a significant step in amplifying African voices on global platforms, highlighting key issues that affect the continent, and fostering international collaboration towards sustainable development and peace.
