Paxslim Launches “Africa Only” Cultural Movement to Celebrate African Identity
Paxslim, a musician with roots in Nigeria, aims to redefine African identity with his new cultural initiative, “Africa Only.” This movement encourages young Black artists across Africa and its diaspora to connect with their heritage and create work that reflects their true selves instead of conforming to external expectations.
The Africa Only Movement
Paxslim, who has lived in Nigeria, Canada, and Switzerland, expressed the significance of embracing one’s African identity despite the societal pressures often associated with it. He stated that “Africa Only is a full-circle moment for every kid who grew up feeling like being African was something to hide.” The initiative seeks to shift the narrative from seeking validation to proudly owning one’s identity.
The movement resonates with historical sentiments surrounding cultural pride, drawing inspiration from past intellectual movements such as Négritude, which originated in the early 1930s among Francophone thinkers. This earlier movement emphasized the importance of Black identity amidst colonial narratives. Similarly, in Nigeria, groups like the Zaria Art Society and the Mbari Club have historically aimed to foster artistic expression rooted in African heritage.
Paxslim’s work is characterized by a contemporary approach that maintains ties to this rich tradition while utilizing modern digital platforms. He explained, “Africa Only isn’t something I just added to my brand; it’s who I am.” His music, including recent projects like the EP “LAMBO MUSIC,” reflects this commitment to authenticity and engagement with African cultural themes.
A notable component of the movement is the “Africa Only Radio,” launched in 2026. The radio series showcases underground artists from various African nations and aims to build a network of creative exchange among them. Initial episodes featured Nigerian artists and subsequently expanded to include cultural figures from countries such as Tanzania, South Africa, and Uganda. This initiative serves as a platform for artists to connect and share their influences, aiding in the development of a unified African cultural identity.
Implications for the African Creative Community
Despite the challenges posed by global artistic influences, Paxslim believes that the “Africa Only” movement empowers African artists to prioritize their culture while engaging with global audiences. He highlights that the movement is not about introducing foreign elements but rather celebrating what is inherent in African culture. Paxslim concluded, “AO doesn’t need to influence any African artists or creatives, because it’s who they are.”
Why It Matters
The “Africa Only” movement represents a growing trend among young African artists to reclaim and celebrate their cultural identities. By fostering a sense of community and pride, Paxslim’s initiative is positioned to contribute significantly to the ongoing dialogue around African art and identity, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in creative expression.
