Private prison companies CoreCivic and GEO Group reported a combined revenue of $1.4 billion for the second quarter of 2026, highlighting a significant increase aligned with rising immigration detention numbers in the U.S.

Financial Performance Amid Growing Detention Rates

These earnings, announced recently, reflect operations from April through June, during which the U.S. held nearly 66,000 individuals in immigration detention. This figure approaches record-levels last recorded in January, according to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a research center focused on immigration statistics.

CoreCivic’s revenue for the quarter was noted at $684.9 million, representing an increase of over 27% compared to the previous year. Patrick Swindle, CoreCivic’s President and CEO, attributed this growth partly to lower operating costs and a higher number of detainees. He also stated that the recently finalized sale of four facilities to the Department of Homeland Security, which generated $1.6 billion, has not yet been included in these figures but will impact upcoming reports.

GEO Group also experienced significant growth, with total revenues reaching $732.1 million, an increase of nearly $96 million or 15% compared to the same period last year. CEO George Zoley pointed to 2025 contracts as vital contributors to this revenue boost.

The rise in revenue comes as both companies explore new markets, including electronic monitoring systems, particularly for Haitian immigrants who recently lost their protected immigration status. Zoley noted that contracts involving ankle monitors and other tracking technology for individuals outside detention continue to gain traction, further strengthening their financial positions.

CoreCivic and GEO Group have positioned themselves to potentially benefit from policy shifts related to U.S. immigration enforcement. CoreCivic has plans to continue operations at recently sold detention centers and is pursuing further developments in line with federal detention targets.

The close ties between these companies and government officials, including former GEO executives now in key positions at ICE, may play a role in shaping future contracts and opportunities within the immigration sector.

Why It Matters

The financial performance of private prison firms amidst increasing immigration detention rates raises important questions regarding the moral and ethical implications of profiting from incarceration. As the U.S. grapples with immigration policy and detention practices, the ongoing expansion of private prison operations could significantly influence both governmental approaches and societal attitudes towards immigration enforcement.
