Innovative Startups in Qatar Push Boundaries of Technology
Several Qatari startups are transforming key sectors such as agriculture and healthcare by integrating advanced technology and data-driven solutions.
Davide Fabris, co-founder and commercial director of Growa, highlighted the evolving nature of food security, noting it has shifted from merely an agricultural concern to a strategic issue. Growa utilizes satellite data, connected devices, and automation to provide real-time insights for farms. A notable example is Al Waha farm, which started adjusting its processes based on the data provided by Growa. Fabris emphasized a significant change in perspective, stating that farmers transitioned from questioning the technology to eagerly anticipating its implementation. “That was when we realized we weren’t just building a startup; we were building infrastructure,” he said.
In the healthcare sector, Dr. Doaa Farid, co-founder of Medica Technologies, shared inspiration drawn from her personal experiences in Qatar’s emergency care. Frustrated by the extent to which healthcare professionals were bogged down by paperwork, she observed a need for improvement in administrative efficiency. Initially creating solutions for her family’s hospital, she found that other clinics facing similar challenges expressed interest in the systems developed. This response helped Medica gain traction beyond its initial scope.
Wisam Costandi, co-founder and CEO of EMMA Systems, also detailed his startup’s genesis. EMMA emerged from a project executed through his systems-integration company, Informatica Qatar, at Hamad International Airport. Costandi noted that an airport operates similarly to a small city, with various stakeholders operating independently. After demonstrating successful integration at Hamad International Airport, he recognized a broader opportunity for their technology. With support from Qatar Science and Technology Park, they developed an initial product module, which was later established as EMMA Systems.
These startups underline Qatar’s commitment to fostering innovation across diverse fields, indicating a robust support system for emerging technologies in the region.
