ISTANBUL—Russia’s fleet of oil tankers is adopting new defensive measures against a series of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting its energy exports, which have become essential to the country’s economy. The tankers are being equipped with netting, metal cages, and other protective tools to help shield them from these aerial threats.
Since August, Russian oil tankers have regularly set sail from the Black Sea, departing from Istanbul and navigating through the Bosporus Strait. Many of these vessels are now displaying a range of makeshift anti-drone devices, including rubber tires, in an effort to bolster their defenses against ongoing conflicts in the region.
These modifications reflect the increasing tension and escalation in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, particularly as Ukraine has intensified its drone operations aimed at disrupting Russian energy supplies. The new measures are part of an evolving strategy by Russian operators to secure their maritime routes and maintain critical oil exports.
As the situation develops, it remains crucial to monitor the impact of these changes on both maritime security and the broader energy markets linked to Russia’s economy.
