The Seattle Seahawks secured a dominant 20-3 victory over the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night, marking a significant turnaround after two consecutive losses. The Seahawks’ defense played a crucial role, limiting Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to just 165 passing yards, no touchdowns, and one interception.
Running back Kenneth Walker III, who was a standout for the Seahawks in their Super Bowl victory earlier this year, was held to 36 rushing yards on 14 attempts against his former team. This was a notable decrease for Walker, who had been leading the NFL in rushing yards before the game.
Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “To stand steadfast in some adversity, that’s what we do. We find solutions.” The defense’s impressive showing included limiting Kansas City to its lowest total yards, first downs, and red-zone drives in any of Mahomes’ starts. The three points scored by the Chiefs marked one of the lowest outputs in Mahomes’ career.
In terms of offensive performance, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold contributed effectively, completing 257 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His performance was bolstered by receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks also had a productive rushing game, totaling 153 yards, including a 100-yard performance from running back Emanuel Wilson.
The victory improved Seattle’s record to 4-3, keeping them just two games behind the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West. The win provided a much-needed boost following an uneven start to the season, where the Seahawks had won two games, lost three, and faced narrow defeats in those losses.
For Kansas City, the offense struggled, an unusual occurrence considering their previous performances this season. Mahomes noted the team’s struggles, saying, “You gotta feel it. This sucks.” Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged the need for improvement across all areas, taking responsibility for the loss after kicker Harrison Butker missed two field-goal attempts.
The Chiefs fell to 5-1, scoring under 22 points for the first time this season. They are set to face the Denver Broncos in Week 8, while the Seahawks will host the 5-2 Chicago Bears, who have averaged 30.8 points in their recent matchups, on November 2.
