A coding challenge designed for elementary school students took place at the Mississippi Children’s Museum on Thursday. This event precedes the upcoming Mississippi Science Fest, a weekend event focused on science and technology.
The C Spire C3 Jr. Challenge tasked students with using their technical skills and critical thinking to overcome various obstacles presented in a competitive format. Participants were encouraged to engage with concepts in robotics and artificial intelligence.

C Spire’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Carpenter, highlighted the event’s significance, stating that students from 23 different schools participated in the competition, which took place in Jackson and the Meridian museums. Carpenter emphasized that the challenge not only focuses on critical thinking and collaboration but also incorporates a unique escape room theme, enhancing the learning experience.
This coding initiative is part of a series of activities leading to the Mississippi Science Fest, scheduled for Saturday. The C Spire Foundation has been collaborating with the Mississippi Children’s Museum for the Science Fest for the eleventh year and has hosted the coding challenge for nine years.
The event serves as an opportunity for students to gain insight into technological fields while fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills, which are essential in the 21st century.
Why It Matters
Engaging young students in coding and technology through hands-on experiences encourages interest in these fields and develops critical skills that are increasingly relevant in today’s job market. Initiatives like the C Spire C3 Jr. Challenge contribute to building a foundation for future innovation and educational growth within the community.
