Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle has expressed regret to the fans following the team’s 4-1 defeat against Coventry City on Monday. The loss marked Newcastle’s second consecutive away defeat by the same scoreline, following a similar result against Leeds United a month earlier. Jamie Carragher, analyzing the match, remarked that Newcastle was “beaten up” during the game.
After the recent string of results, which includes two losses in their last three matches, Newcastle has fallen to 11th place in the Premier League standings. Jaissle noted that his team was wasteful, registering 19 shots and three significant chances, yet the team struggled to find the back of the net. In contrast, Coventry managed to convert their opportunities effectively.
In his post-match comments to Sky Sports, Jaissle acknowledged the frustration felt by both himself and the fans. “We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result,” he said. He emphasized the need for the team to analyze their performance and pointed out areas requiring improvement, particularly in defense and finishing. “The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing,” Jaissle added.
Jaissle also highlighted that Newcastle has now conceded the most goals in the league, alongside Bournemouth and Chelsea. He called for a thorough assessment of the game, stating, “It’s not something we can compare with the Leeds match today because I think we were at least better… If you conceded eight goals in two away matches on Monday evenings, then it’s not good enough for the Premier League.”
For Carragher, the results are indicative of a significant issue with the team’s physicality. On Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, he criticized the squad for being “outfought” in their recent games, suggesting the absence of physical strength may be a factor impacting their away performance. “In their last two away games, they’ve been beaten up twice – and that’s got to stop very quickly,” Carragher noted.
This is the first time since December 2012 that Newcastle has suffered consecutive away losses by four or more goals in the Premier League. With their next match approaching, Jaissle and the team will be looking to make necessary adjustments to avoid further setbacks and regain their footing in the league.
