Hong Kong investors lead Asia in their ambition to select winning stocks, but their return expectations are notably more conservative compared to their regional counterparts. A recent survey by Natixis Investment Managers revealed that 95 percent of respondents from Hong Kong are aiming to outperform the market, the highest percentage in Asia. In contrast, the overall average for the region sits at 85 percent.
Despite their eagerness, Hong Kong investors anticipate long-term returns of 12.3 percent above inflation, significantly lower than the regional expectation of 17.3 percent. This disparity comes amid a broader market rally over the past 18 months, largely driven by enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence.
The survey, conducted in August, highlights a cautious approach among Hong Kong investors, who appear to temper their hopes for returns even as they express a strong desire to beat market performance. This trend may reflect a more measured outlook in response to recent market fluctuations and economic conditions.
As the article notes, the difference in expected returns may also indicate varying confidence levels in investment opportunities across the region, especially as the AI sector continues to draw significant interest and investment. The findings suggest that while ambition is high, expectations remain grounded in a more realistic assessment of market conditions.
