Jake Sollon of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took the lead after the first round of the Dominican Republic Tour Championship, carding an impressive score of 8-under 64. His performance included a stellar front-nine score of 30, placing him one stroke ahead of Luis Gagne from San Jose, Costa Rica.
The tournament, sponsored by Scotiabank, is a key event for the top 60 players on the PGA Tour Americas Points List, who qualified for this season finale at PGA Ocean’s 4. The competition is significant as the top 10 players on Sunday’s final points list will secure membership on the Korn Ferry Tour for the 2027 season.
Entering the week ranked No. 50 on the points list, Sollon’s first-round score was his second-best of the season, only surpassed by his opening round of 63 at the ECP Brazil Open. Sollon earned his PGA Tour Americas membership by progressing from the First Stage to the Final Stage of the PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry last year. His best finish so far was fourth place at the KIA Open de Ecuador presentado por Diners Club in May.
Thomas Longbella from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, is in third place, finishing the round at 5-under 67. A five-way tie for fourth includes several notable players: Patrick Flavin of Highwood, Illinois, who is currently ranked No. 4 on the points list, as well as Mesa Falleur from Muskogee, Oklahoma, who barely qualified for the event at No. 60. Also tied for fourth are Patrick Sheehan of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, who is ranked No. 11, Jonas Baumgartner from Bielefeld, Germany, and Marcus Byrd of Temple Hills, Maryland.
As the tournament progresses, players will be looking to make their mark, aiming for spots in the Korn Ferry Tour next season.
