Ireland’s women’s rugby team secured a 40-27 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the WXV Global Series in Cape Town. This marks Ireland’s first visit to South Africa, where they scored six tries against the hosts.
Ireland Leads at Halftime
The match featured a competitive first half, with Ireland taking a 21-17 lead into the break. Aoife Dalton, Linda Djougang, and Jane Clohessy scored tries for Ireland, while South Africa’s Aseza Hele, Vainah Ubisi, and Maria Tshiremba added to their team’s total.
In the second half, Ireland extended its lead as Beibhinn Parsons and captain Erin King crossed the try line. King had previously received a yellow card for a high tackle in the first half. South Africa’s Lerato Makua managed to score, but Djougang’s second try ultimately secured Ireland’s win.
Despite a late try from Alichia Arries for South Africa, the outcome remained unchanged. Djougang’s two tries and Dannah O’Brien’s five conversions contributed significantly to Ireland’s performance, while Jakkie Cilliers managed one conversion for the home team.
The two teams are set to meet again on October 31 at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
